Our Volunteers

Volunteering is all about giving your time to help others—whether it’s for an individual, a group, or a community—without expecting payment. But it’s not just about giving; volunteers also gain a lot in return, like personal growth, social connections, career experience, and even better physical health.

Statistics from 2023 General Social Survey show that over half of New Zealanders (53.0%) volunteer – an increase of 2.3% since 2021 (50.7%) – and are volunteering an average of 18.1 hours over the previous four weeks (15.9 hours in 2021). For those that volunteered, 27.6% volunteered through an organisation (30.2% in 2021), and 40.8% volunteered directly for another person (36% in 2021).*

We have a dedicated team of police-vetted volunteers who provide a wide range of support to our members - and many of the people who help are also members themselves - giving help where they can and receiving support when they need it.  For example, someone might need help with tree pruning or stacking firewood, but they can drive another member to the supermarket or make tea at our monthly meeting.

The requests we receive for help are varied so we have volunteer opportunities for most people, with flexibility for our volunteers to give whatever time they can. This could be anything from an hour a month to a few regular hours every week.
