History

KADAP Inc. (Kawerau and Districts Ageing in Place) started in November 2015 after a group of locals noticed gaps in services that made it harder for older residents to stay in their own homes. Whether renting or owning, many people just needed a bit of extra help to keep living independently. The founding members developed the concept by drawing inspiration from international research and adding their own local ideas. It was the first initiative of its kind in New Zealand and its benefits quickly became clear.

Kawerau has a population of 7,670, with 20.3% aged 65 and over—higher than the national average of 16.6%*. This makes it an ideal place for an organisation like KADAP to thrive. The organisation now has over 330 members and around 75 people registered as volunteers who can lend a hand with everyday tasks, so people can stay in their homes for longer, keep their independence, and stay socially connected. Many members also volunteer, offering help where they can give it, and receiving help where they need it.

In November 2025 the organisation celebrated 10 years of supporting older residents in Kawerau. Members and volunteers were joined by board members past and present, current and past coordinators, local MP Dana Kirkpatrick and social scientist Carole Gordon MNZM.
